Akira Kurosawa’s Sanjuro (1962) serves as both a sequel to the 1961 masterpiece Yojimbo and a subversion of the jidai-geki (period drama) genre. While Yojimbo presented its protagonist as a cynical master of manipulation, Sanjuro introduces a more introspective version of the masterless samurai who finds himself babysitting a group of naive young warriors.
