"I saved your life," she shot back without looking up. Her hands shook slightly, but her voice was pure steel. "If I hadn't taken out that sniper, you’d be a corpse on the docks right now."
Leo softened, stepping into the dim yellow light of the overhead bulb. He sat on the bench opposite her, reaching out to take the roll of gauze from her hands. She didn't resist.

"I lost your mother to this life," Leo whispered, expertly wrapping the white cloth around her arm. "Every time you pick up a weapon, I see her. And it terrifies me."
"You weren't supposed to be there, Maya," Leo said, his voice a low growl. "I saved your life," she shot back without looking up
