The plot begins when a car salesman, Carl Resnick, arrives at the CBI headquarters dragging what he believes is a large sack of potatoes. In reality, the sack contains the body of a dead woman, Mary Beth Hendricks. Patrick Jane quickly identifies that the man is in a deep hypnotic trance and has no memory of how he acquired the "potatoes".
