Guido van Rossum created Python in as a "hobby" programming project to keep himself busy during the week around Christmas while his office was closed. Working at a research center in the Netherlands, he wanted to build a successor to a language called ABC that would be easy to read and capable of handling system administration tasks for the Amoeba operating system.
