After a near-death experience on a WWI battlefield, Tomás becomes a "post-mortem photographer," posing deceased family members for final memorial portraits. He is lured to a remote Hungarian village by a young orphan girl, Anna, who resembles a figure from his near-death vision. Upon arrival, he discovers the village is literally haunted; because the ground is too frozen to bury the plague victims, the dead remain in the village, attracting malevolent spirits.
