Driven by an instinct stronger than any fence, Lassie escapes the Duke's kennels and races back to the school gate. Joe is overjoyed to see her, but the reunion is short-lived. Sam Carraclough, bound by his word and the money that is keeping his family alive, must return the dog to the Duke.

The Carraclough family desperately tries to nurse the dying dog. Soon, the Duke of Rudling arrives at their cottage, having tracked Lassie's incredible journey. Joe's parents brace themselves to give the dog back one last time.

Yet, she also encounters kindness. An elderly couple, the Foulds, take her in when she collapses on their doorstep, nursing her back to health. Though they grow fond of her, they realize she is driven by a higher purpose and let her go. She also travels for a time with Rowlie, a cheerful traveling peddler, and defends him fiercely from robbers.
