The film opens with a 1957 prologue where a priest attempts to kill an infant believed to be the Antichrist, only to be stopped by police. Thirty years later, Marek enters the monastery under the guise of a novice. He soon discovers that the "exorcisms" performed by the monks are staged using crude special effects and mechanical tricks.
