The story begins in a remote mountain village where , an occult detective from Tokyo, is hired to investigate a string of livestock mutilations. There, he meets a social outcast nicknamed "Dorotabo" (after a muddy field yokai), a boy who smells of rot and is mistreated by his relatives.

Inugami discovers the boy, whose real name is , is a Hanyo —a hybrid born from a human and a "bloodless ghoul". Kabane possesses a "Life Calculus," a stone that suppresses his monstrous hunger and keeps him immortal.
