The story begins with the ruthless usurping the throne of Thessaly and murdering King Aristo . A prophecy warns Pelias that a child of Aristo—specifically a "one-sandaled man"—will eventually avenge the king. Twenty years later, Jason unknowingly saves Pelias from drowning, losing a sandal in the process. Recognizing him from the prophecy, Pelias manipulates Jason into undertaking an "impossible" quest for the Golden Fleece in the distant land of Colchis, hoping Jason will die in the attempt.
