Hannes attempts to avenge Eren's mother by fighting the Smiling Titan alone. Despite his bravery, he is captured and eaten while Eren and Mikasa watch in horror.

In a state of pure despair, Eren lets out a massive "scream" as he punches the Smiling Titan's hand. This action unintentionally activates his "Coordinate" power, commanding all nearby pure Titans to swarm and devour the Smiling Titan, and then to attack the Armored Titan.

This distraction allows the surviving Scouts to retreat back to the safety of the walls.
