He opened his bedroom door. There, resting on the hardwood floor just outside his reach, was a small, silver key. Heart hammering, Elias scrambled back to his computer to delete the file. It now read: download-16

Elias laughed it off as a prank or a fragment of an indie horror game. But when he went to close his laptop, he heard a soft thud from the hallway of his own apartment.

The video opened to a grainy, low-bitrate shot of a hallway. It looked like an old hotel—musty floral wallpaper and flickering sconces. There was no audio, just the visual hum of digital artifacts. For twelve seconds, nothing happened. Then, a door at the far end of the hall creaked open.

Most people would have deleted it. Elias, a digital archivist with a weakness for curiosity, double-clicked.
