In 1873, Dr. Horace Porter established a post office in the area and named it "Cocoanut Grove" (the extra "a" was eventually dropped) after seeing a few coconut palms on the bayfront property he was renting. By the 1880s, English immigrants Isabella and Charles Peacock opened the , the first hotel on the South Florida mainland.
