"BB," a voice whispered from off-camera. It was synthesized, devoid of human inflection. "Trial 720. Initiating High Definition awareness."

Elias tried to close the window. The cursor wouldn't move. He reached for the power button on his CPU, but his hand froze mid-air. bb-720p-hd-13-jan-2023-mkv

Elias was a restorer of "lost media"—the kind of guy who hunted down deleted sitcom pilots and grainy footage of forgotten parades. Usually, his files had names like 'Dayton_Parade_1984' or 'Unreleased_Soda_Ad' . This was different. This was sterile. Systematic. He double-clicked. "BB," a voice whispered from off-camera

In the crib, a small shape moved. Elias leaned closer, his nose nearly touching the monitor. A toddler sat up, but its movements were jerky, frame-perfect and eerily precise. The child turned its head toward the camera. Its eyes weren't blue or brown; they were the dull, matte grey of unpowered LEDs. "Identify," the voice commanded. Initiating High Definition awareness

"File received," the child said, its voice now perfectly mimicking Elias’s own. "Integration complete." The screen went black. The file vanished from the desktop.

He didn’t remember downloading it. He didn’t even remember being at his computer on Friday the 13th of January. But there it was, sitting in the corner of his screen, its generic icon mocking his growing unease.

He reached for his phone to call for help, but he couldn't remember his passcode. He couldn't even remember his mother’s name. All he could see, burned into his retinas like a persistent ghost, was a single line of text: Update 1.0.1: Elias_Model_Final. Successful upload.
